The Keeping Adults Safe in Shropshire Network held a joint event with Telford Safeguarding Partnership on the 20th of November 2019 to raise the profile of the issue of Domestic Abuse and Older People. The event was aimed at staff and volunteers across organisations in Shropshire and Telford to raise awareness of the specific needs and issues for older people who are at risk of, or experiencing domestic abuse.

We had a number of key speakers and presentations at the event including:

  • Lisa Smith, Assistant Director from Research in Practice for Adults who provided an overview of Domestic Abuse and Adult Safeguarding; and explained the concept of coercive control
  • Workers from Shropshire Domestic Abuse Service who provided an overview of the work of Shropshire Domestic Abuse Service and supported a survivor of domestic abuse to share her story with delegates.
  • Diane Harding, Hospital Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (HIDVA) Lead from West Mercia Women's Aid who provided an overview of the HIDVA Service available across both Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals.
  • A presentation from SafeLives highlighting the findings from their national research of Domestic Abuse and Older People

All power-point presentations from our key speakers and videos for two of the presentations can be accessed via links to the right.

We also had a number of stalls from various organisations serving Shropshire and Telford who provided an opportunity to network and offer further information into the wide range of services available across Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin.

As well as our stallholders; particular thanks goes to the following for helping make the event happen:
